Business Manager

The Organization: Tomorrow’s Leaders NYC (TLNYC) provides support services to over-age middle and high school students to overcome social, emotional, and academic challenges with the goal of graduating high school and becoming career, college, or vocational program ready. TLNYC works with historically vulnerable and underserved communities in New York City’s Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queen’s public schools, serving over 1,000 students through programs during and after school. Services include Academic Support, Social and Emotional Learning, and Leadership Skill Development Workshops, Vocational Preparation, Mentorships, Internships, Community Service Projects, and Family Engagement.

The Role: Business Manager 

As TLNYC’s Business Manager, you will support and manage all aspects of the organization’s accounting and budgeting. Your responsibilities will span payroll, annual and monthly budget management, the corporate credit card program, accounts payable, and accounts receivable. You will have the opportunity to be business employee #1 and shape this function for an organization impacting over 1,000 students every year.

  • Pay rate: Hourly: $50-$75 per hour (expected to work 20-30 hours per month) commensurate based on experience

    Location: Hybrid-  (will be expected to meet in person with Executive Director at least once a week)

    Business Manager Duties and Responsibilities

    • Weekly
    • Prepare and process payroll accurately and on a timely basis
    • Reconcile payroll accounts
    • Communicate payroll information to employees weekly
    • Submit invoices to accounts payable vendors (schools, organizations)
    • Monthly
    • Maintain payroll records and prepare payroll reports
    • Assist in preparing annual and monthly budgets
    • Manage and track grant revenues and allocations
    • Prepare and submit payroll taxes

    • Ad-hoc and Ongoing:
    • Research and resolve payroll discrepancies
    • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
    • Build reporting and share financials on a regular basis with Board Financial Treasurer and Executive Director, and larger board upon approval of financials
    • Develop and maintain systems, tools, and processes to efficiently manage and track finances
    • Maintain and oversee employee credit card spending program (Ramp)

    Educational & Experience Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree
    • Expertise with Excel / Google Sheets and willingness to explore advanced functions to optimize the organization’s financial management
    • CPA or other financial accreditation
    • Previous experience with payroll processing
    • Knowledge of payroll laws and regulations
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and payroll software
    • Strong organizational skills
    • Able to handle confidential information
    • A strong reflex for action to be proactive, find and improve gaps in process, and work independently
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
    • Excellent accuracy and attention to detail
    • Collaboration within a team
    • Adaptable to operate in a rapidly growing and evolving organization
